About Us

My name is Robert Straw, founder of  Action Against Food Poverty.

We organise

a weekly Saturday morning walk around central London offering food, supplies and conversation, not only our homeless friends, but anyone struggling with daily life.

AAFP talks

to Mia, a Chinese lady in her eighties who we serve hot noodles to while we talk about the issues of living on the street at her age.

Then there’s Gary, an autistic guy who desperately wants a flat of his own but has been let down so many times by the system he has lost all hope. We offer him a piece of homemade cake and a hot drink and chat for about twenty minutes or so and after he says life may be not so grim after all.

Then there is Sarah, living in a tent in central London who says that AAFP are the only people who speak with any sort of respect. By offering food, supplies and conversation we can make a deeper contact with these people and maybe let them see there is a small but bright light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Our slogan is

Using Food As A Catalyst For Conversation

because we have found that talking to people is just as important as the food we serve.

AAFP

is looking to raise our profile in accessing the
funding and support we need. Companies can support us by:

1

Make a donation on our crowdfunder page by clicking here. It costs us around £200 per month to run the Saturday morning walk and make a difference.

2

Make a donation for your employees to join the walk. This not only helps with customer service skills and team building as well as increasing self confidence .

3

Sharing the work we do here at Action Against Food Poverty with your customer’s partners, contacts, customers, etc. Help us spread the word!

We want the companies and its employees who are involved with us on an ongoing basis not to just make a donation.

If an employee attends a walk it would be amazing if the company had a section on their website so that they could share their experience and any other positive social issues other people might have.

About Us

In March, this year I founded Action Against Food Poverty (AAFP).

The reason I founded AAFP was after volunteering for several homeless organizations, I concluded that although these organizations fulfilled a certain need, in the long run they were not helping the homeless to achieve a better quality of life.

By providing food means that the homeless ultimately have spare money to spend on activities that may not benefit them emotionally or physically.

Using Food As A Catalyst For Conversation we walk the streets of London offering homemade sandwiches, cakes and other treats to try and make a difference. Back then we were serving 20-25 people having maybe a 5-minute chat. Six months on we serve between 35-45 people and engage with them for much longer.

We want to challenge people in a positive way about the situation they find themselves in and suggest options for them to move forward. All AAPF can do is listen and turn up every week, rain or shine, but by doing this we feel that we can make a real difference.

We want to expand the walk to other areas and focus on supporting not only food and supplies mental heath and general emotional welfare of the people we serve.

A lot of problems start at childhood with this in mind Action Against Food Poverty would like to sponsor a primary school breakfast club in an inner city area. So supporting children at a young age being positive and encouraging personal development can give a child an amazing start in life.

Action Against Food Poverty really thinks this approach can give the child the tools to help them start life, being able to move forward with confidence to deal with situations that might arise helping build a stable and secure place to grow and learn and be a balanced individual.

"Robert’s mobile food bank aims to both alleviate food poverty and combat loneliness.”

Why we need your help

In order to keep helping our friends get off the street, we need financial support to continue giving and continue our mission.

So far, we have only had individual donations, and are now looking for companies who are interested in giving back, to help us reach and help even more people.

Please let us know

If you would be interested to meet and discuss our impact further.
